mis muchas madres

8 May

they say it takes a village to raise a child,

and while that is true,

i would propose that what it really takes, in the long run, is many different mothers.

where would i be without my capital m: Mother?

who gave me life and continues to, everyday in new ways.

as i grow up, up, & away – she is the string to the balloon.

how beautiful . . . before me:

and after:

this one Mother would have been enough!

but then there are the other mothers.

the sadie. the paula. the gail, karen, kelley, & shawn. the in-lucky-to-have-law, lisa. the many who would be embarrassed that i called them the m word, but must know how much formidable stuff they’ve poured into me. that stuff that makes me better. the stuff i store up for later, to be as hearty and heartening as those who have mothered me.

happy mother’s day to all the mothers – mine and others’.

know that, children or none, you are pouring good stuff into those around you. muah.

What a sweet tribute, Abby. You truly do have a most amazing mother. I’ve never seen the younger days picture before – so cute, yet I think she’s much more beautiful now! And you are a most beautiful balloon!!
