it’s not always about you.
even when it is, it’s really about those who came before. those who made you what you are, for better or worse.
and from 30 years distance, you see how much of you is them and how much of your world they’ve built. and as you step out to build something new, you know even the disparate parts will always fit into that familiar familial machine.
they didn’t know you then, but they loved you.
and even now they keep loving and giving in bigger ways, finding new gadgets to bridge the gaps as the cranks and doo-dads between your wheels grow tired, break down, get replaced, and run smoothly once more.
the jokes change as we share more life, but the tears of laughter are the same. when do you tell a highway he was adopted, anyways?
after thirty years together, their spark continues to keep the machine running, and all you can think is how you “be so proud” to be a part of it.
happy anniversary you two. cheers from afar!
